Finding the right fit for ERP

When does tailoring ERP create a competitive advantage, and when does it create complexity that makes change harder? ERP News Magazine Issue 32, October 2022, explores Customized ERP Solutions through eight executive interviews, practical analysis, product announcements and customer experiences. The issue considers industry-specific functionality, configurable workflows, cloud platforms and low-code tools alongside the governance needed to keep systems maintainable.

Executive perspectives on business fit

David Stephans, CEO of Rootstock Software, is interviewed by Bruce Richardson, Chief Enterprise Strategist at Salesforce. Stephans discusses growth following Gryphon Investors' investment, manufacturing expertise, customer enablement and the benefits of a common Salesforce platform. He argues that support, training and connected applications are central to digital transformation. Research figures cited in the interview are attributed findings, rather than guaranteed outcomes for every deployment.

Andy Coussins, SVP and Head of International at Epicor, reviews the company's 2022 Industry Insights Report, based on 1,350 IT decision-makers across four countries. The discussion connects business diversification and hybrid cloud with demand for interoperability, industry knowledge and stronger implementation support. Stephen Edginton, Epicor's Chief Innovation Officer and Senior Vice President of Engineering, provides a complementary technology perspective. Application Studio, Automation Studio and low-code business intelligence let people closer to operational problems shape solutions, while business understanding remains essential. Natural-language-driven development is discussed as a future direction.

Christine Barnhart, VP of Product Marketing and GTM at Nulogy, shifts attention from individual enterprises to networks of brands, contract manufacturers and packagers. She emphasizes shared production information, two-way visibility and coordinated decisions. A separate announcement introduces Nulogy Data as a Service; beta customer MSI Express describes qualitative benefits for waste identification, quality and service, without quantified savings.

Wayne Slater, Director of Product Marketing at Prophix, explains corporate performance management through budgeting, forecasting, consolidation and scenario analysis. He encourages CFOs to combine digital tools with staff development and clear demonstrations of finance's value. His interview also distinguishes Prophix's focus on the Office of Finance from competitors expanding into broader operational planning.

Sage contributes two interviews. Dan Miller, EVP of Sage Intacct, describes investment in inventory automation, lease accounting, AP workflows and industry capabilities, with market expansion and product availability at different stages. Walid Abu-Hadba, Chief Product Officer at Sage, explains the Microsoft partnership, including Teams workflows for expenses and leave requests and access to Sage financial solutions through Azure. Both interviews place productivity and connected experiences at the center of SMB growth.

Dave Dyer, Regional President of North America at Unit4, examines the Business Future Index and the pandemic's acceleration of technology adoption and flexible work. His discussion links employee experience, executive collaboration and ESG with composable ERP. The research spans 3,450 respondents in 12 markets; US-specific findings and global results retain their separate scopes.

Customization, governance and finance automation

Mike Guay, VP, Customer Success Executive at Infor, explains how tightly coupled changes made older ERP systems difficult to upgrade. Modern application platforms offer more flexible extensions, but still require governance, regular releases and removal of redundant custom code. Allan Lessing of OptiProERP weighs functional gaps and business differentiation against defects, support burdens and upgrade costs. Bill Baumann of Panorama Consulting Group examines five risks of excessive customization, while Vijay Ural of Tayana Solutions presents potential benefits for distinctive operational needs. Together, these articles frame customization as a business decision requiring explicit objectives.

Global Shop Solutions offers a structured buying guide covering vendor evaluation, demonstrations, references and proposals. Rohit Gupta, Founder and CEO of Auditoria, discusses finance helpdesks using AI and natural-language processing for routine AP/AR requests, triage and insights. His article describes intended capabilities and benefits; its broad claims about error-free software are not established guarantees.

Customer experiences and transformation plans

Automotor chooses Infor CloudSuite Distribution Enterprise and Authentic Group's automotive distribution solution after interrupting an earlier ERP project. Renewed process analysis and industry expertise underpin objectives for warehouse flows, replenishment and shared data. The announcement supplies no measured post-rollout improvement.

T. Rowe Price implements Oracle Cloud ERP and EPM with Grant Thornton through a phased project completed in one year, on time and on budget according to the story. Standardized accounting, automated reconciliations, consolidation, tax reporting and enterprise data management reduce manual work and improve transparency. No numerical time saving or ROI is provided.

Construction and engineering group Denys purchases IFS Cloud for procurement, logistics, finance, projects and people processes. Arcwide is to roll out the platform to 400 users across Belgium and other European operations. These are implementation plans and intended benefits.

UBS and Microsoft expand their cloud partnership, with UBS planning to move more than half its applications to Azure over five years. The article reports an earlier migration milestone and up to 30% lower energy consumption for certain workloads, alongside Carbon Aware API collaboration. This workload-specific figure is not a bank-wide emissions reduction.

Lovesac's NetSuite story describes a platform supporting financial processes, inventory, orders, its 2018 IPO and changing sales models during the pandemic. It reports operational support for growth without a quantified ERP-attributable return. The article's inconsistent references to a billion-dollar milestone are not treated as verified annual revenue.

Cirque du Soleil's SAP story connects RISE with SAP and SAP S/4HANA Cloud with international finance and merchandising, alongside Ariba procurement, Concur travel and expense, and experience management with Qualtrics. Costume-component tracking and visibility into spending illustrate reported operational benefits; the article provides no numerical ROI and mixes migration language with descriptions of results.

Industry developments

News includes Epicor Kinetic's Fall 2022 updates, QAD Adaptive ERP enhancements, NetSuite SuiteBanking with HSBC, Unit4's BDO relationship, NTT DATA's agreement to acquire Aspirent, and Nextworld's Intuiflow integration with Demand Driven Technologies. Sage's accountant tools and Hammock partnership appear in their historical Making Tax Digital context. An Airbus and Capgemini consortium is selected for France's future emergency communications network, a public-sector technology announcement rather than an ERP implementation. Roger Landman of SYSPRO closes the manufacturing perspective with reshoring, automation, digitization and cybersecurity in metal fabrication.

Across these contributions, business fit depends on clear priorities, reliable information, appropriate extension tools and continuing vendor partnership. The issue encourages readers to evaluate the long-term operating consequences of customization alongside its immediate appeal.
