Connecting sustainability with everyday ERP decisions

How can organizations make sustainability part of operational decision-making rather than a separate reporting exercise? ERP News Magazine Issue 43, May 2024, examines Sustainability Integration in ERP: Greening the Supply Chain through manufacturing, finance, technology investment and customer experiences. The issue connects environmental ambitions with the information, people and processes needed to turn plans into practical action.

Manufacturing leadership and sustainable operations

Taylor Windatt, Operational Excellence Lead Coach at QAD Redzone, describes his move from military intelligence and logistics into manufacturing coaching. His interview emphasizes leadership participation, listening to operators, addressing individual problems and mentoring new coaches. Technology adoption depends on trust and engagement, not just training sessions.

Within the interview, Utah confectionery business Taffy Town illustrates the approach. Windatt reports a 100% productivity improvement over deployment of all four QAD Redzone modules. Translation tools helped a largely Spanish-speaking production team share ideas, while an existing culture of recognition supported participation. The figure is an interview claim rather than an independently audited result.

Conor Flanagan, ERP Team Lead at Storm Technology, outlines announced Dynamics 365 Business Central sustainability accounts, journals and ledger capabilities. Eric Kimberling of Third Stage Consulting Group discusses resource monitoring, environmental metrics, phased implementation and change management. Todd Wells, Acumatica’s Chief Marketing Officer, links Earth Day with event reuse, operational practices, certifications and further emissions commitments.

Software AG’s extended whitepaper argues for investing in digital transformation and sustainability together. Its “Genius of the And” approach examines culture, incentives, cloud, data integration and edge computing using historical research. Joddi Goertzen, Continuous Improvement Leader and Senior Financial Consultant at Global Shop Solutions, considers seven priorities for manufacturing CFOs: automation, analytics, sustainability, cybersecurity, risk, talent and connected financial/operational data.

Enterprise technology, trust and industry developments

Syed Ali, Founder and CEO of EZO, explores automation and self-service in enterprise asset management, including emergency services and education. Christoph Nagy, CEO of SecurityBridge, reviews SAP Fiori security across communications, authentication, data, devices, privacy and clickjacking. ASAR Digital surveys ten ERP trends, Aptean identifies seven SME implementation mistakes, and Abas explains metal-fabrication requirements from CAD integration to traceability and document management.

Paul Taylor, SAP Senior Correspondent and Columnist, examines trust in AI through Paul Saunders, SAP’s head of Product Strategy and chief evangelist of Cloud ERP for SAP S/4HANA. Infosys contributors Karthik Chakrapani and Sagar Ashokbhai Solanki present potential automotive after-sales applications combining Salesforce Automotive Cloud and generative AI. Brian Dahm, IFS Senior Global Brand Activation Manager, describes IFS.ai’s Big Ten basketball partnership, branding and advanced statistics.

Juergen Mueller, identified in the issue as SAP CTO and Executive Board member, reviews innovation award examples. News covers Ilya Dynkin’s 25 years at Global Shop Solutions, Fortaco’s bond placement, SecurityBridge’s Taciti alliance, Protera’s Managecore acquisition, Sage’s Morehouse partnership, Acumatica board appointments and Atlassian Rovo. SAP also provides a Hybris merger notice and a product overview of Ariba and Business Network support within SAP for Me.

Customer experiences: outcomes and implementation plans

Air Systems International selects SYSPRO and Lonehill Systems to replace a decades-old platform. MRP, purchasing, EDI integration and a smaller server footprint are selection objectives; the announcement does not establish completed operational results.

SW Imports replaces QuickBooks with SYSPRO through Edgeware and reports going live in one month. Analytics, inventory visibility and supply-chain planning support expansion; tripling product lines over five years is a target.

Architectural Fabrication combines Rootstock Manufacturing ERP, Salesforce Sales Cloud and Field Service. The award announcement reports greater project capacity, lower turnover and area-specific returns, alongside substantial business growth. These figures describe the broader collaborative ecosystem, rather than isolating ERP as their sole cause.

Hotel Equities selects Oracle NetSuite for its growing hotel portfolio. Consolidation, multicurrency operations and owner communication are intended benefits. Property-system/POS integration and AI-enabled financial tools remain planned or exploratory in the release.

Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team and SAP outline cloud modernization supporting resource planning and cost-cap management. SAP S/4HANA Finance, Business AI, Build and Business Technology Platform feature in the joint vision; the story does not provide measured savings from a completed rollout.

Speck Pumpen’s Abas ERP case describes connected planning, multisite data and configurable processes. It reports delivery times reduced by about half and a configured-product quotation phase falling from 14 days to 15 minutes, while further upgrades and machine-data work are prospective.

Bayer’s Pharmaceuticals Division works with NTT security specialists and Nozomi Networks across 15 major sites. Guardian appliances and a Central Management Console provide OT/IoT visibility, anomaly detection and consolidated risk monitoring. Reported benefits are improved transparency and response capability, without a quantified cyber-loss reduction.

Additional sustainability examples

Martur Fompak’s SAP award example combines AI-enabled automotive customization with carbon-impact information, reporting 34% lower emissions per seat. González Byass uses SAP Responsible Design and Production to improve materials data; its cited recovery and recycling results have distinct scopes.

Vestas uses SAP Ariba and Business Network for supplier collaboration. The article reports 6,000 suppliers onboarded and US$12.5 billion in purchase orders executed in 2023, illustrating adoption at scale.

Bolloré connects transport management and customer-platform modernization with monitoring 41 sustainability indicators. DHL Express appears separately as an example of planned carbon-reduction investment and process/data technology. QTRS uses IoT for refrigerated-truck monitoring, with qualitative benefits for spoilage and emissions.

Intel’s sustainability-linked incentives and Unilever’s employee communication/training illustrate cultural mechanisms in the Software AG whitepaper; neither is presented as a new ERP implementation here.

Across these varied contributions, the issue frames sustainable ERP around shared information, accountable implementation and a clear distinction between reported achievements and future ambitions.
